 Thomas W. Carpenter was born in Harlan, Iowa, on June 17, 1932. He was admitted to the Iowa Bar in 1960 and joined the law firm of Grefe & Sidney in 1971. He was with the law firm of Schaetzle, Austin and Grefe from 1960 through 1962 and with the law firm of Austin, Grefe & Sidney from 1962 through 1971 when the firm became Grefe & Sidney. He received his preparatory education at Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1954. He received his Juris Doctorate in 1960 from the University of Iowa College of Law, Iowa City, Iowa. Mr Carpenter is a member of the American Bar Association, the Iowa State Bar Assocaiton, and the Polk County Bar Association. In addition, he is a Fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and the American Bar Foundation. He is also a member and past president of the Des Moines Estate Planner Forum. Mr. Carpenter's civic affiliations have included serving as chair of Rotary Club of Des Moines, Tiny Tot Child Care, Inc., Wesley Retirement Services, Inc., and United Way of Central Iowa. He spends the majority of his time in the area of estate planning and probate law, including tax, employee benefits, pension and profit sharing, trusts, estates, and nonprofit corporations and foundations.
Mr Carpenter is a Fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and the American Bar Foundation. He is also a member and past president of the Des Moines Estate Planner Forum.
