Criminal and Civil Cases
In the wake of Covid-19, the Iowa Supreme Court has issued a set of orders temporarily suspending civil trials as well as non-emergency criminal trials. Not all court proceedings are impacted by these orders. Trials that are affected are set to resume on:
- June 1, 2020: criminal non-jury trials
- June 15, 2020: civil, including family law non-jury trials
- July 13, 2020: criminal jury trials
- August 3, 2020: civil jury trials
These orders are subject to modification so the above dates may change. All updates and orders from the Iowa Supreme Court are available on the Iowa Judicial Branch Covid-19 Information and Updates page: https://www.iowacourts.gov/iowa-courts/covid-19-information-and-updates/.
Workers’ Compensation Cases
The Iowa Workers’ Compensation Commission has also issued a set of orders suspending all in-person regular contested hearings before the agency from March 18, 2020, through at least June 16, 2020. Regular hearings that were scheduled to occur during that period will be conducted via video conference unless the parties timely file a motion to continue.
